Farmer (Landwirt/Landwirtin)
You grow crops, care for animals and drive agricultural machinery: a 3-year training, paid from the first year, on a working farm.
What a farmer does
They work the soil, sow, tend crops and harvest, then store and sell their produce. In livestock farming they feed and care for the animals. They also handle costing and farm administration.
Grow
Work the soil, choose seed, fertilise, tend crops and harvest according to the seasons.
Rear
Feed, water and care for the farm animals, and clean the barns.
Manage
Use and maintain machinery, store and sell produce, and work out costs.

In Germany you learn by working: this is the “dual system”. You are an employee of a company and a student at a vocational school (Berufsschule) at the same time.

Exams and qualification
An intermediate exam (Zwischenprüfung) takes place before the end of the 2nd year: a practical and oral part lasting up to 180 minutes, plus a 90-minute written paper. The final exam has a practical part (up to 7 hours, crop and livestock production) and 3 written papers of 120, 120 and 90 minutes. The certificate is issued under the authority of the Chamber of Agriculture (Landwirtschaftskammer).

Gross monthly pay during the training. These amounts are averages: they vary by region, sector and collective agreement.

Specialise, for example as a Klauenpfleger (hoof trimmer) or countryside manager.
Master farmer (Meister)
Take the Landwirtschaftsmeister to run a farm and train apprentices.
