Biology laboratory technician (Biologielaborant/in)
You analyse cells, micro-organisms and samples in a laboratory: a 3.5-year training, paid from the first year, alternating between the employer and vocational school.
What a biology laboratory technician does
They study animals, plants, micro-organisms and cell cultures, carry out biochemical tests and record the results with laboratory information systems.
Analyse
Study cells, tissues and micro-organisms, including under the electron microscope, and run biochemical tests.
Culture and test
Isolate and grow cells, then test the effect and the side effects of medicines on organisms.
Document
Plan tests with laboratory software, record and evaluate the results while following legal rules.
This occupation is for you if…

- you work patiently and precisely, even on long series of tests
- you accept strict safety rules and animal protection rules
- you are comfortable using a computer to record and evaluate data

In Germany you learn by working: this is the “dual system”. You are an employee of a company and a student at a vocational school (Berufsschule) at the same time.

Exams and qualification
The final exam (Abschlussprüfung) has 2 parts held at different times. Part 1 (35% of the mark) takes place before the end of the second year. Part 2 (65%) takes place at the end, with laboratory work and written papers. You obtain the Abschlusszeugnis (final certificate) of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK).

Technician or master
Train as a technician (Techniker) in biotechnology or chemistry, or as an Industriemeister (industrial master) in chemistry.
University studies
If university entry is met, study for example biology, life sciences or biomedicine.
