Event technician (Fachkraft für Veranstaltungstechnik)
You set up and operate lighting, sound, video and stage structures for concerts, trade fairs and shows: a 3-year training, in a company and at a vocational school.
What an event technician does
They prepare the technical equipment for an event, build the structures and systems, connect them safely, then run them during rehearsals and the show.
Plan
Analyse an event's technical needs, design the systems and draw up the running order.
Set up
Build stages, rigs, lighting, sound and projection, and connect the power supply and networks.
Operate
Run the lighting and sound desks and trigger projections during rehearsals and the show.
This occupation is for you if…
- you have a feel for technology and good manual dexterity
- you are precise and take safety very seriously
- you enjoy teamwork, often in the evening or at weekends
- you adapt quickly to venues and conditions that keep changing
Less suitable if…
- you want regular hours, with no evenings or weekends
- you cope badly with noise, ladders and working at height
- you dislike carrying equipment and heavy loads

In Germany you learn by working: this is the “dual system”. You are an employee of a company and a student at a vocational school (Berufsschule) at the same time.

Exams and qualification
An intermediate exam (Zwischenprüfung) in the fourth half-year, then the final exam (Abschlussprüfung): carrying out a technical project, technical and event planning, power supply, economics and social studies. Qualification: the IHK final certificate (Abschlusszeugnis) from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Work at an event agency, trade fair organiser, performance venue or studio.
Master in event technology
Prepare the Meister (master craftsman) exam to lead a team and take on responsible posts.
Studies or own company
With the required entry level, study event technology or start your own company.
